A hammam inside a school
A school inside a hammam
Children and adults together
in a classroom without students and teachers.
In there
information overwhelms
silence prevails
gazes are returned
In there the body undresses
differently
In there
the body is,
as it does not need to be
“BodIS” performance results from site-specific research at the historical spaces of Keratsini School of Art, which used to be the Armenian “Palandjian” hammam (1932-1972). The collaboration of the creator with the mixed aged group of adult dancers and dance students of the school, attempts to bridge the past and present of the building throughout a symbolic dialogue of Body, Time and Architectural Space. The piece explores if the body, emancipated from its socially disciplined and professionally constructed self (persona), could lead to a more versatile and human way to be together. In that context, the historical hammam turns into an alternative school, in which the learning and socialized body needs to relate in a non-stereotypical way both with itself and the others.
