CITY PROJECT 2015 | A TRANSFER | MARIA LOIZIDOU

Curator | Syrago Tsiara, Director of the Center of Contemporary Art, Thessaloniki

NEON is collaborating with Cypriot artist Maria Loizidou to present her contemporary art installation in the grounds of the ancient cemetery and museum of Kerameikos, one of the most significant monuments of Ancient Athens. Using modern techniques to weave stainless steel fibers, the artist creates a dialogue between the memory of place  and the traces of the ancient traditional Greek art of weaving. The exhibition unfolds along a route that starts from the windows looking onto  the museum’s inner yard and leads to 6 further spots around the archaeological site. During this walk, the exhibition showcases different aspects of the feminine creative craft of weaving: the collective work, the correlation of weaving with the notion of time and the artistic depiction of the female psyche on the crafted work.

CITY PROJECT is an initiative for public art and the city, conceived and commissioned annually by NEON to a Greek artist. NEON aims to activate public and historical places through contemporary art, contributing to the interaction of art, society and the city.
