CITY PROJECT 2016 | THE PERFORMANCE | ZAFOS XAGORARIS

Artist Zafos Xagoraris’s starting point for ΝΕΟΝ CITY PROJECT 2016, is the play Our Great Circus by Greek poet, playwright, screenwriter and novelist Iakovos Kambanellis, first performed  in 1973 at the Athinaion theatre

In a car park behind the now derelict Athinaion theatre, Xagoraris’s mobile structure combines a recreation of the play’s original large neon sign and a sound installation inspired by the performance. Passing pedestrians and drivers will be momentarily transported back to the play’s first 1973 staging and encouraged to reflect on its importance in Greek cultural history.

The project will be completed in 2017 with the production of a film and associated publication.

CITY PROJECT is an initiative for public art and the city, conceived and commissioned annually by NEON to a Greek artist. NEON aims to activate public and historical places through contemporary art, contributing to the interaction of art, society and the city.
