Project | PIIGS_An Alternative Geography of Curating
Exhibition | (IM)MATERIAL GESTURES
PIIGS_An Alternative Geography of Curating is a discursive space taking shape through an exhibition associated with a dense talks programme, aimed to activate a reflection about the economic crisis and its implications on artistic and curatorial practices. The project involves twenty-eight young curators from Portugal, Ireland, Italy, Greece and Spain, European Union members that after the 2008 slump has been deemed insolvent and stigmatized with the acronym PIIGS by international press.
The survey is carried out by five curatorial groups from each country of the acronym selected through curatorial practice courses: NEON Organization for Culture and Development (Athens, Greece), Campo 15, Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo (Turin, Italy), Art + Research Collaboration, IADT (Dun Laoghaire, Ireland), ARTIS – Instituto de História da Arte da Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Lisboa, (Lisboa, Portugal), Máster en Historia del Arte Contemporáneo y Cultura Visual, Universidad Complutense de Madrid, Universidad Autónoma de Madrid & Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía (Madrid, Spain).
(IM)MATERIAL GESTURES is an exhibition within the framework of PIIGS_An Alternative Geography of Curating presented at Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo in Turin. . Its intention is to problematize both the material and the immaterial exhibition practices, showing their compatibility with the neoliberal objectives while they are incorporated in museum programs.
