Eri Dimitriadis’s exhibition both, as yet unwearied, will keep pretty well together, curated by Galini Lazani,  aims to talk about the unique identity of the islet of Agios Georgios of Salamis, a place with a long history, whose memory is in danger of being forgotten.

For over a century, Agios Georgios served first as a quarantine station and later on as a place of confinement for patients with mental illnesses. Currently being a naval base, it remains desolate and inaccessible. Throughout its history it has always been a place with a distinctive status and idiosyncratic ways of operation; regardless of the strict boundary the sea was setting, both the inhabitants of the island and those on the opposite coast repeatedly aspired to break that isolation.

Dimitriadis’ work is implemented in two parts. The first one takes place on the specially chartered ferry boat of the line Perama – Salamina, which will run the usual route on roundabouts. It consists of an audio installation with interviews by residents of Salamis that narrate all they remember from the island, as well as a sculptural installation inspired by a story that lingers between reality and fiction. It is said that an elderly inmate of the psychiatric clinic was trying to empty the sea with a basket, trying to communicate with the opposite shore.

The second part of the exhibition is a lighting installation in some of the abandoned buildings on the islet itself, thus conveying the feeling to those on the ferry boat that it is still inhabited. Eventually, where there is nothing left to inhabit, remembrance resides and seems to be the most alive thing washed up on its coast.

The exhibition is supported by NEON Organization.
