From its inception, the role of NEON has been to bring contemporary culture closer to everyone; closer to an uninitiated audience; closer to each of us. Our space is the city, and it will continue to be. At this time, staying at home is a necessary disruption from our habitual physical relationship with our city, but not from our mental and emotional desire to reconnect with each other again. If this ongoing crisis has taught us anything, it is how deeply interdependent we all are.
To plan for the future in this moment is to be bold and creative. NEON is continuing its programme: commissioning new works and gathering artists, institutions, museums, galleries and curators; all of us working together to support our community and bring new experiences to everyone.
Our programme is carefully thought out to serve a community of people – exhibition-making that engages with the fabric of society, both our heritage and our present. Our initiatives focus on empowering our participatory nature, embracing diversity and deepening our understanding of the other.
More than half a million people have visited our exhibitions in Athens and around Greece: 28 exhibitions in 23 different locations, over 7 years. From the magnificent archaeological site of Delos, to the ‘secret gardens’ of Athens and our partnerships with museums, our engagement has focused on the relationship between the city’s public space and its citizens: as a birthplace for sociality, culture and civilization.
We work on our mission from home. Our educational activities, grants and scholarship opportunities continue without interruption. The video archive on our website is available to everyone.
We prepare ourselves with unwavering passion and commitment for the time we will, once again, be together with all of you in our city. Until then we embrace association, allegiance and creativity and find comfort and strength through our interwoven relationships, through art.
