KINONO Tinos Art Gathering, organises contemporary art exhibitions in various places of Tinos with historic significance and distinctive locality, so as to promote a dialogue among the current artistic creativity, tradition, as well as the notable topography of the island, providing the visitor with a different setting to interpret the works of art.
Within the running theme of the Garden of KINONO 2018, three group exhibitions are presented in different spaces of the island and also the garden –a work in progress of “Sykia” (Fig Tree), in Chora. KINONO’s exhibitions, namely, Volax Blind Date (Volax village and folk museum), Ephemeral Gardens (Euaggelistria’s Park and Textile School in Chora), Artificial Edens (Ursulines School) attempt to highlight different approaches to the garden, corresponding to the three thematic units of KINONO 2018 (Secret Gardens, Local Gardens, Virtual Gardens)
The garden is defined through a grid of antithesis: birth-death, blossoming-withering, organic-inorganic, natural-artificial, private-public, while transmuted into a delimited, territorial formation. From the first ever designed private gardens of Egypt (1400 BC) to Ebenezer Howard’s Gardens (1898) and from the cosmological symbolisms of the gardens of Iran to the Zen Gardens of Japan, the common feature of the gardening practice is the cross-breeding of nature, art, man and landscape.
KINONO’s Gardens endeavour to compose an organic space, where the locality’s specificity, culture, landscape and tradition of Tinos provide the ground for an open interactive experience. Participants, locals and visitors are invited to co-design the format of their own participation, like their own garden. The exhibitions will be open to the public throughout KINONO. With the support of NEON.
