On view from 11 May through 12 June, 2021, Gay Love in Pictures, organised and curated by Vasilis Noulas & Kostas Tzimoulis, explores homoerotic sensitivity as it is reflected in the present time, through the work of six artists, living and working in Athens. The exhibition alludes the viewer to see that life is simple, life is right in front of our eyes and its beautiful! Look at it!
Through the use of traditional techniques, mediums of representation, as well as hybrid or conceptual practices, the artists, Kostantinos Ladianos, Vasilis Noulas & Kostas Tzimoulis (VASKOS), Angelos Papadimitriou, Ilias Papailiaki, Dimitris Papaioannou and Kostis Fokas, approach a different subject matter. A powerful eroticism that claims visibility but also normalizes its representations.
The reception of a work of art in the context of homosexual desire, poses a twofold challenge, moving away from the abstraction for the sake of a (representational or conceptual) statement of desire and concurrently, moving away from the “death of the author” theories for the sake of a biographical “statement”. We are dealing with a return to the specific, to the historically and biographically determined. The simple – often judged obsolete – questions about a work of art “What or Whom does it depict”, “Who created it?” “What is their intention?” acquire a key character here and charge the projects automatically and naturally with a claiming power.
The exhibition is supported by NEON.
