Katerina Oikonomou & Alexandros Efklidis
One to One on Opera
There is a fundamental contradiction on how the art of opera is perceived: on the one hand, it is considered to be more conservative and oriented towards the economic and social elite classes, thus placing it within a strict framework; on the other hand, its core nature is characterized by transcendence, as its primary means of expression, a feature mainly based on the nature and the expressive possibilities of the human voice. It is not surprising that it has often been used by performance artists, who were obviously interested in the transcendental side of opera, instead of its conservative side. On the occasion of the performance intervention of opera singer Katerina Oikonomou for As One, the artist will discuss with director Alexandros Efklidis about the expressive boundaries of opera, its affinities with contemporary performing arts and the peculiarities of an opera singer as a performer.
