Educational Programs for the exhibition Flying over the Abyss designed by Evi Papavergou & Katerina Paraskeva, museum educators at the Contemporary Art Centre Thessaloniki:
For Primary schools
Taking inspiration from Martin Kippenberger’s quotation: “He who confronts the abyss, should not be surprised if he can fly,” we explore what the word ‘abyss’ means to each of us and how different artists interpret it in their work – William Kentridge’s imaginary journey to the moon, and the raft of associations surrounding the sculptures that make up Abraham Cruzvillegas’s installation. We conclude the program by analysing our relationship with the ‘Other’ using Maro Michalakakos’s Happy Days (Oh Les Beaux Jours),and Savvas Christodoulides’s Ladders Joined Together, as starting points for telling stories of our own.
The program also includes an introduction to the museum, a short tour of Flying over the Abyss, and plenty of opportunities to discuss and share opinions about the ideas and works in the exhibition. It can be tailored to all age groups and grades of primary education.
For secondary schools
An interactive game and tour familiarises students with the museum, the exhibition and the ideas behind contemporary and conceptual art before delving deeper into the principle exhibition themes: Genesis/Trauma, Life Struggle: An Affirmation, Creativity Into Eternity, Touching the Other, Return to the Abyss.
